Ochagavía students interview cattle farmers and food producers in the area
- In the “With what we eat” project, the students of Ochagavía have had the opportunity to get closer to the daily life of farmers and food producers in the area. In addition to serving to value local products, “they have seen young people living happily in these jobs, in a sector that is becoming empty,” says the professor.
They have carried out various activities around food and all levels of the College of Ochagavía have participated in one way or another in the project, from Early Childhood Education to Compulsory Secondary Education.
The doctors of Salazar have talked with the students about nutrition from the point of view of health, have participated in the program of distribution of milk and fruit, have taken advantage of the school garden, have been sowing seeds, vaccinating and poddishing, have addressed the issue of waste… and to finish the project the students have known eight farms of the Salazar valley.
In addition to bringing us closer to the reality of producers, the students have interviewed the farmers and created the digital magazine Animendi that collects these interviews. “In our environment there are many producers, but we have a habit of consuming outside, not even the logic of marketing incites local consumption, because experience has helped them to know and value the local – says Professor César Armendariz – and the producers have been very comfortable showing what young generations do.”
The project has touched on two of the pillars of the pedagogical line of the center, as explained by Armendariz: on the one hand, studies based on experience and, on the other, involvement with the territory. “We live in a special context, in an area where depopulation predominates, and it is important to work with our environment.”
