Independentists have imposed themselves in the Polynesian elections that continue to depend on France
- Tavini Huira'atira has won 38 representatives in the second round of votes and have been distributed among the other two autonomous parties: Tapura Huiraatira with sixteen seats and A Here la Porinetia with three. The independentists have therefore assumed the authority of the autonomists who until then dominated.
The hunger for independence has spoken in Polynesia that is still dominated by France: the independentists have succeeded in the territorial elections. They have won the absolute majority for the next five years, winning 38 of the 57 seats. Politician and activist Oscar Temaru will be the president of the assembly. Tapura Huiraatira obtained 38.5% of the votes – sixteen seats – and 17.2% of the votes for A Here la Porinetia, three representatives. This has led them to the power of the independence autonomists. The difference is greater than on the first lap of April 16: Tavini Huira'atira won 34.9% of the votes and Tapura Huiraatira 30.46%.
The island of Uhartedia consists of 118 Pacific islands with a total population of 300,000. It was colonized by France in 1842 and since then it continues to depend on France, although it changes its status: since 1946 it has the status of "ultramarine France", with some autonomy.
A referendum on independence?
They still have more weight in negotiating a referendum on independence. Moreover, since 2022 in the French Parliament they also have three independence representatives, that is, they have intermediaries to make the cry heard also from Paris.
