Protection against male violence: In the Southern Basque Country, 31% of reported cases did not include measures
- At the national level, both the protection measures implemented and the applications submitted have decreased.
According to the Observatory against Domestic and Gender Violence of the General Council of the Judiciary, in the Spanish state, the measures of protection against "gender violence" decreased by 6.5% in 2024. Measures to protect victims may be taken by direct order of the judges or at the request of both the defence and the prosecution, but in proportion to the reported cases of male violence, both the requests made and the requests accepted have decreased.
In 2024, 199,094 complaints related to "gender-based violence" were filed in Spain, but only 33,247 cases ordered measures to protect victims. In other words, only 16.69 per cent of the complaints resulted in the adoption of protective measures for these women. This proportion has decreased since 2023, when it was 17.84% in that year.
In 2024, in fact, protection measures were implemented in 2,314 fewer cases than in 2023. A total of 49,268 applications were submitted to the courts (approximately one quarter of the cases reported involved protection measures), but only 67.48 per cent of them entered into force. In 2023, 69.9% of the applications were considered.
On the other hand, according to the Observatory, the number of requests for victim protection measures has also decreased for reasons that it has not specified. Compared to 2023, they made 3% fewer orders in 2024; and, as we said, they accepted 6.5% fewer orders.
The Observatory has also determined data by Autonomous Communities. The percentages of approved applications have been reduced in all communities except Catalonia (47.8% in 2023 and 49.6% in 2024). However, the percentage does not even reach half in the same place as in Madrid (46.6% last year). In the Southern Basque Country, on average, only 31% of applications made progress in 2024: 22% in Navarre and 41% in Álava, Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa.
