A Colombian investigative journalist reports that she was raped and tortured by paramilitaries
- Colombian journalist Jineth Bedoya has denounced extreme right-wing paramilitaries who enjoyed protection from state apparatuses for their kidnapping, torture and rape in 2000. The Inter-American Court of Human Rights (ECHR) of the United States investigates its complaint. In statements to Democracy Now, the detainee has denounced that he was kidnapped outside a prison in Bogotá, drugged, beaten and several people raped on several occasions, according to the newspaper.
In addition to testifying hard to his violation in court, Bedoya has pointed out that since then he has had to live for two decades with ongoing persecution, intimidation and threats.
The Colombian Government is trying to ensure that the International Court of Human Rights (ECHR) does not take a step forward in its investigation. Bedoya spoke earlier this month about the effects of her case in a video hanging on the social networks of the Basque capital.
"My case is to bring an international court not only to denounce what happened to me as a woman and a journalist, but to open a window of hope to thousands of women and girls, like me, who have been victims of sexual abuse in the armed conflict in Colombia," he said.
