The company Serunion, S.A. will not offer any more dining services. Through an agreement, the Department of Education and the company have decided to suspend the contracts to which they were linked, due to the “problems” encountered in some centers this course. Starting on 5 February, the companies Tamar, Auzo Lagun and Goñi will be responsible for providing the dining room service, according to the Department of Education. Serunion served as a dining room at different points in the CAPV, including seventeen schools.
The Department of Education has pointed out that this is a “dissolution agreement between the two parties”. They stress that when there were problems the Department of Education opened a file to the company, and that, having regard to the “effect”, Serunion “rejects” the employment contracts in the centers.
A long-standing issue
Throughout the course, the company has generated problems in several centers. Last November, for example, the parents denounced the “vicissitudes” of the ikastolas of Hernani and Durana. The most serious case occurred at the Ikastola Langile de Hernani, when one of the children found a worm in the food. The unions also joined the protests and LAB, for example, claimed “canteens that prioritize the quality and safety of food.” Also, the parents of ikastola Langile de Hernani protested in the Plaza de los Gudaris de Hernani to demand a “dignified and healthy food”.
Education Advisor Jokin Bildarratz said they would take steps to “not happen again”. The Department of Education imposed a fine of EUR 65,000 on the company and now decide to terminate the contract.
