81% of the schoolyard area is asphaltic in Vitoria-Gasteiz
- The courtyards of the educational centers of Vitoria-Gasteiz have been analyzed and the conclusion is clear: they have few green areas in the schools. The diagnosis intends to be a first step to favor the transformation and leveling of playing spaces, taking into account the environmental, educational and development and health benefits of the students.
The backyards of the educational centers do not respond to the students' needs and have no pedagogical objective. This is clearly indicated by the Centre for Environmental Studies in its report. The Centre, the autonomous municipal body of Vitoria-Gasteiz, has analyzed 109 educational centres in the capital, from nursery schools to vocational training centres, both public and concerted.
Schools without green areas
Data are significant: 81% of the patio areas are asphalt or other type of impermeable soil and only 19% is green. In 22 centers, they don't have a single green field in the outdoor spaces. In addition to the green areas, trees, orchards and similar elements have been analyzed, and the differences between schools are notable.
The report aims to be the starting point for changing the situation. In recent years, there have been few educational centers that have initiated processes of transformation of the recreational backyards, centered on the importance of the outdoor spaces of the schools. The report stresses the importance of having green areas in school: “It is climatically beneficial, contributes to improving air quality and reduces noise, improves water management… In addition, natural elements are a fundamental educational and educational resource that promotes environmental awareness. Natural spaces have been shown to promote mental well-being and cognitive development.”
