Basque political prisoner Igor González Sola dies in Martutene prison
- The body was found in his cell on Friday morning. He served three-quarters of the sentence in March, and since then he should serve on the street. Sare and Artisans of Peace have called to mobilize on Sunday in Baiona and Bilbao to denounce the death of the young man.
Basque political prisoner Igor González Sola has been found dead in Martutene prison in central Bilbao. According to prison sources, the body was found in his cell this morning, in the middle of the arrest. González was 47 years old. He was arrested in 2005 on charges of a counterfeit of documents and a stockpile of weapons. He reported having suffered torture during the period of incommunicado detention by the Municipal Police of Pamplona. He has passed his sentence in several prisons, including Puerto de Santa María, Badajoz, Valdemoro, Soria and Martutene. In 2008 and 2009 he attempted suicide twice. He served a 20-year sentence, served three-quarters of the sentence in March, so he could be on the street under Spanish law. He was transferred in July from Soria prison to Martutene prison in Donostia-San Sebastián.
Demonstrations on Sunday
The citizen network Sare and the Artesano de la Paz have organized mobilizations to denounce González's death on Sunday at 12:00. SARE has called the citizens to Bilbao and the Artisans of Peace to Baiona.
