Berlin puts on the table a gas pipeline project linking the Iberian Peninsula with Germany
- German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stressed the urgency of carrying out the gas transport project imported from North Africa.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz considers this gas pipeline essential in order to reduce the dependency on Russian gas. The gas transport and transport project from North Africa, from Spain and Portugal to central Europe, was put on the table at the press conference on 11 August.
Scholz talked about the project with the presidents of Spain and Portugal, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the President of the Council of Europe, Emmanuel Macron.
MidCat since 2013
The objective of the MidCat pipeline has been on the table since 2013, despite the fact that in 2019, a study carried out by the European Commission revealed that a project of around EUR 440 million was neither economically interesting nor necessary. The Spanish and Portuguese authorities are in favour and the works would end "up to eight or nine months", according to Teresa Ribera, Minister of Energy Transition of Spain in the TVE medium.
