The Ibero remains a great mystery, but less and less. It was used in a very broad area, not only in the peninsula, but from the Canary Islands to Italy, covering the whole of Aquitaine, i.e. at least two large areas of the Pyrenees.
In Euskal Herria, for example, we have a full text in Iberian (found in the mosaic of the city of Andio in Mendigorría), a few texts (including the recently appeared in Herriberri) and some of our coins (Barskunes, Arsao…).
With these texts we try to clarify the identity, culture and many things of the Basque ancestors and the Iberian peoples, and there we Basques have a great deal to say. Why? The Basque language seems to be one of the languages best preserved in the old mother tongue of Europe. The Basque Country, for example, because we can help to decipher the root toponyms that exist throughout Europe, from the German “Ar(a)ntal” to the peninsular “Aranjuez”, “Aranda”, etc. Because through the Basque Country we can help decipher hydroonyms with European roots of “water” and “iz”…
And why has the investigation of the Iberian in our country never been promoted? Why have you looked the other way if there was nothing to say? And why until recently have we not wanted to help the researchers who study and work in the Basque country to investigate the Iberian in Valencia, Catalonia and many localities?
More than 2,000 texts and coins on Iberia have been collected in this area that has so far been home to much of Western Europe. And thanks to the research carried out so far, some things have been clarified, such as the counting system: 1-ban, 2-bin, 3-hirur, 4-four, 5-borse, 6-sei, 7-sisbi, 8-sorze, 10-abar, 20-orkei, erdia=erder.. and it has been observed that it looks a lot like the Basque.
Two Catalans have worked most on clarifying the numbering system: Jean Ferrer and Eduardo Orduña. And here, from the university, the only thing he has spoken has been Joseba Lakarra, to say that the Iberian and Basque numbers have nothing to do with it, because “it does not match the theory of the Old Basque Country”. That is, because foreigners have given importance to the Basque country because it has helped to clarify the ibero and those from here to counter it. Curious no?
But the most striking thing has been the silence in the face of the barbarity of Lakarra, both in Basque philosophy and in that of many of those working in this field. But we're already used to writing graffiti to clarify Iruña Veleia, because they haven't even said anything. And because they have also been silent in the face of the judgment and punishment of an innocent. And because they're also deaf against the attack of ETB's late Euskaldunization.
But let's get back to the point. In addition to clarifying Iberian numbers, there is a level of consensus of about 200 more words, but in most other texts it is not yet. I mean, most of them are about to do. In this sense, to get to know the ibero, the Basque and the works published in this area, a conference is held annually in Salduie-Zaragoza. The organiser is the Association of Iberian Language and Culture, in which Euskararen Jatorri also collaborates.
This year’s Iberiera Conference will be held on 27, 27 and 28 August and are open to those interested in this subject. The information is available in: speakers, conferences and inscriptions:
