On 16 February, the National Students have called to mobilize. The UPV/EHU will hold a demonstration in Vitoria-Gasteiz to demand the withdrawal of the files that it wants to open to 34 students, starting from the Elurreta building of the UPV/EHU campus, at 12:00.
At the Tuesday morning hearing, the student organization talks about the reasons why the demonstration is convened. Last March, a student strike was held called by the DMA, in which it was reported that several students from different UPV/EHU campuses have been "persecuted, continued, threatened and attacked" by the action of the pickets. Among these threats is the intention of the UPV to open a file to 34 students.
Last year, following the strike incidents, the UPV/EHU was asked to suspend possible sanctions. Despite the requirements, the university has informed several students of the opening of the file. In particular, he sent the letter to the 34 students who were arrested on the day of the strike in Vitoria. Consequently, they are at risk of being expelled from the university, as explained by the DMA.
The threat of opening files has been described by the WFD as "a net violation of political freedoms". "A sign of wanting to act from the University, violently suppress any claim or political organization". They consider that the possible opening of the files would constitute a "dangerous precedent" for criminalizing the "independent organization of students". In this sense, they have required the UPV/EHU to revoke these files, as well as the denial to the police of access to university and the completion of social control at university.
They consider that the UPV/EHU has evolved towards authoritarianism and that facts should be understood in this sense. "Although the university sells us as a free and plural space, every day we students see it as a space without political freedoms. The suffocating presence of the cameras, the constant persecution, the police threat and the risk of being expelled from the university for exercising its political activity", have read. In this regard, they have regretted the use of police force or academic sanctions against political conflicts rather than dialogue. In this case, they will also use the demonstration to denounce the "authoritarian attitude" of the UPV/EHU.
