Two Bilbaite antimilitarists are sentenced to three years in prison for a protest against military spending
- On 24 January two KEM antimilitarists will be tried before the Bilbao court for a protest and a parody of the military headquarters of Juan de Garay Street in December 2021 against military spending and requesting that the land of the barracks be for Irala’s neighbours.
On December 18, 2021, several members of the Bilbao KEM group protested at the entrance of the famous Spanish army headquarters on Juan de Garay Street. On the one hand, they called for the return of the 6,500 square meters occupied by the barracks to the neighbours of Irala and, on the other, they denounced the rise in the budget for war within the "Bota Kuartela" campaign. In that nonviolent act of protest, two activists went up to the wall and two other members represented that with the hammer in their hand they were bringing down the wall of the barracks, giving several blows to the wall. The Ertzaintza then identified entrepreneurs and accused them of "damage."
The complaint then comes to court. On 24 January, two activists from the Bilbao Antimilitarist Group will be tried in Bilbao's Criminal Court No. 5 for attempting to "topple" the barracks. The prosecution has described protesting as a crime of damage and has applied for an 18-month prison sentence and a fine of 4,500 euros for each anti-militarist.
In November of this year, the members of the CEM again made the same protest, this time with a scaffold in front of the barracks.
