It's been a hard summer at Tubacex. The 59-year-old worker died last week after suffering a heart attack while fulfilling his responsibilities at work. Apparently, the temperature at the workplace was high and death was due to a heat stroke, although it is not yet clear. M. was employed by the subcontract of the company Euset. Dr. G. Laudioarra R.
In principle, Tubacex refused to have anything to do with what happened, but some workers’ representatives remembered that the deaths that occur in the company are accidents at work.
The following day, therefore, there were demonstrations and protests, although the participation was not exceptional, as in July hundreds of people concentrated in Tubacex to protest the accident at the Tubacex plant. In particular, on 4 July a 25-year-old boy was hit and killed by a machine at the factory that the Tubacex group has in Llodio and his colleagues immediately responded to the event.
The same day the production was stopped and the next day, in addition to the empty factory, a multitudinous manifestation began, starting from the entrance. In the afternoon there was a concentration and then Ernai
Members of the youth organization cut traffic on Zumalakarrangi Avenue to protest the eviction of the youth.
Precariousness in the spotlight
That in a few months' time there are two deaths in the same company, it must necessarily be a sign that something is wrong. Thus, in July the unions pointed to the origin: precariousness.
Workers' representatives stressed that the policies of the Tubacex Group are focused solely on obtaining benefits and have left the margin essential tools to ensure safety in infrastructure, adequate materials to replace damaged parts, sufficient people to fill the jobs and fill the gaps, or stable contracts, so that workers do not assume dangerous behaviour so that the management of the company is satisfied with them and allocate them the duration of the contract.
What is more, the workers' committee gave names and surnames to those who have promoted all these policies: Celestino Danis, director of operations of the TTI and Aceralava and their “assistants” – always according to the trade unions.
In any case, to these deaths in the summer we have to add another three in the last 9 years.
On the one hand, a young man from Ugao-Llodio died in 2010. In 2012, after suffering a heart attack, another worker died on the sidewalk due to injuries sustained. In addition, in 2013, a 41-year-old worker, belonging to a subcontractor, died in the village of Amurrio.
The company has not moved
Despite the fact that the death of July affected the entire region and despite the fact that the course began with another cadaver, Tubacex’s leadership has not shown any need to deal with these situations. The company has convened a meeting with the works council by 30 September. That is, almost 3 months have elapsed since the first accident.
This position coincides with what was stated in July by the trade unions with representation in the company. After the death of Laudio's young man, the Aiaraldea media contacted everyone and all agreed that no new measures were taken to prevent accidents.
