According to Euskal Irrati Telebista this Wednesday morning, the French police arrested three young people in Urruña and Hendaia, and one of them is a minor, at 06:00 hours. The Police has also searched for a fourth person who has not been located at home when they are seeking their search for security reasons. This person has come on his own at the police station in Baiona, where he has been arrested and transferred to police units. One of the arrested has been released shortly after 15:00, and the other three have been released.
The arrests are related to the events that took place in San Juan de Luz on 14 July on the occasion of the day of the French Republic. On that day there was a demonstration for independence under the motto "assimilation to resistance", in which there were moments of tension between the protesters and the mayor, Jean-François Irigoyen, who tried to prevent a banner for independence from being placed. The demonstration took place when they arrived at the Donibane Lohizune City House, where protesters hung on the verge a banner reading "This is not France or Spain" and to which Mayor Irigoyen, with a French flag, withdrew the banner. The gesture caused moments of tension. As they entered the house of the people of Irigoyen, the demonstrators reinstated the banner.
However, the causes of the arrests are not directly related to the dispute surrounding the banner. Detainees are charged with the resolution of French symbols of the "monument to the dead" that day.
Around 150 people have concentrated this morning in front of the Baiona police station in solidarity with the detainees, according to Euskal Irratiak.
