Urkullu will be present at the commemorative event of the attack of Hipercor
- Today marks the 30th anniversary of ETA’s attack on Hipercor. It will take place during the commemoration of 21 dead and 45 wounded and will be attended by Iñigo Urkullu, accompanied by Carles Puigdemont.
On June 19, 1987, ETA committed the largest car bomb attack in its history. The action was claimed to have “commercial” purposes in a document published at the time, but most of the victims were civilians. The command called three times to the Barcelona Municipal Police, to the administration of the point of sale and to the newspaper Avui, but the building was not evacuated and the massacre took place. In 1994, the National Court of Spain condemned the Spanish State for not evacuating the building.
At today’s event, President Iñigo Urkullu will be accompanied by Carles Puigdemont. The meeting will be held after the event and will discuss, among other things, the independence process in Catalonia. Urkullu will express his support for the President of the Generalitat, but will make it clear that in the Basque Country he will continue to “support a bipartisan process”.
On the other hand, Arnaldo Otegi, the new general coordinator of the EH Bila, has indicated on Radio Euskadi that he will not be present at the event. After talking with the organizers, they decide not to go “cautiously”, thinking that their participation can cause “tension”.
