Claim that linguistic models in Education are rights
- In a joint statement by the Institut d’Estudis Catalans and the Galician Royal Academy, Euskaltzaindia underlined that at the end of the studies, knowledge of the Basque, Catalan and Galician professions is not guaranteed.
The declaration states that the language regulations of the educational system of the autonomous communities with officially recognized own language are the exclusive competence of each of them. According to the language academies, knowledge of the two official languages of each place should be guaranteed, so that the ability to speak in Basque, Catalan and Galician is equivalent to that of Spanish. In order to ensure the future of languages, a “stronger” presence of these three languages in the education system is essential.
They have stressed that the rights of Spanish are absolutely guaranteed in all linguistic models, but in the case of Basque, Catalan and Galician, these rights are not guaranteed. The statement underlines that the Spanish State should consider linguistic diversity as a "wealth to promote" and not as a problem that should not be eliminated as such. Euskaltzaindia, the Institut d’Estudis Catalans and the Galician Royal Academy are ready to participate in the debate, in an exercise that will be "beneficial" for mutual respect and coexistence between linguistic communities.
