Hector Llaitul, a Mapuche militant, is arrested in Chile
- Llaitul is the head of the CAM Coordinator Arauco-Malleco de Wallmapu and is accused of stealing wood, snatching land and committing an attack on the state. On Wednesday, 24 August, he was arrested.
Chilean police arrested Héctor Llaitul, head of the CAM coordinator Arauco-Malleco, in the Chilean town of Cañete, south of Chile. He is an old militant who fights for the rights and self-determination of the Mapuches. Already in 2007, in the dialogue dedicated to ARGIA, it was said that "in the absence of land, the identity of the Mapuches cannot be reconstructed". At the time, they had already been prisoners and were on hunger strike.
His arrest took place in a restaurant on 24 August. In 2020, the president of the time Sebastián Piñera started the investigation against Llaitule, followed by Gabriel Borice, president since March. He is accused of stealing wood, taking out land and committing an attack on the State.
