Call for a ban on genital mutilation of intersex children
- The Day of Intersex Visibility has served to show the unknown reality of intersex people and denounce the generalization of unauthorized surgeries and hormonal treatments that are not yet necessary in intersex children.
It is estimated that between 0.05% and 1.7% of the population is intersexual – to give an idea, about 400 intersex children are born in the Spanish state each year – and although the casuistry is varied and complex, many children who perceive intersexuality live a true medical hell: Before the age of 18 months, often, genital surgery is performed, in order to adapt to one of the sexes. “These great mutilations are very serious and are carried out to adapt to the physical and sexual characteristics of women and men socially designated, that binarism,” they have denounced from the LGTBI group. These interventions are also carried out in the first months of the child, without the person being able to define his/her sexuality. In adolescence, real shocks can occur: for example, if the ovaries have been taken as a testicle and medical intervention has been performed, that young man will be lowered.
These are medical practices which the United Nations considers to be child torture and which in the Spanish State are victims of these practices of about 30-40 children each year
In this regard, the Basque Observatory LGTBI+ has signed a declaration, in collaboration with other international agencies, to “prohibit in minors unauthorised medically unnecessary surgeries, forced hormonal treatments and other invasive medical interventions irreversible unnecessary for life, considering them as criminal acts”. These are medical practices which the United Nations regards as child torture and which each year in the Spanish State are the victims of about 30-40 girls and boys.
They also call for the depathologization of intersexuality and the investigation of "the serious violations of human rights suffered by intersex people".

These approaches have not yet been approved or taken into account in the Basque Autonomous Community.”

The truth is that this lack of knowledge also occurs in the field of health, as the LGTBI group denounces, and that is why they demand greater visibility, among them the deepening of this reality in education and sexual education.
