The Spanish National Court opened an investigation into the alleged former ETA leaders. Following a complaint by Dignity and Justice, Judge Alejandro Abascal, instructor of the National Court, reopens the investigation into the murder of the PP councilor in Durango, Jesús Mari Pedrosa. On 4 June 2000, he was killed by two unidentified ETA members.
The National Court will investigate ten Basques: Iñaki Gracia, Javier Gartzia Gaztelu, Jon Olarra, Ainhoa Mujika, Asier Oiartzabal, Juankar Iglesias, Mikel Albisu, Vicente Goikoetxea, Ramon Sagarzazu and Marixol Iparragirre.
According to the complaint of Dignity and Justice, the Steering Committee of the Armed Agency was in charge of "designing the strategy" of the organization and, therefore, the functions and obligations it established. The association has also argued that ETA followed a strategy of forced eviction of several citizens and that it is related to the murder of Pedrosa and the "violence and threats" suffered.
The judge refuses to impose a bond for the ten investigators who asked for the association, but requests a report from the Civil Guard and the Spanish Police to gather information on "acts of threat and violence against militants of constitutionalist political parties" in the context of acts against the councilor and murder.
