Amaia Egaña, 53, jumped from the balcony of her house in Barakaldo (Bizkaia) and fell in love with her. They were to be evicted and committed suicide before receiving the letter of dismissal: the court order to which he was going to deliver the letter that went up the stairs of his house. Egaña, who at the time asked for a mortgage loan in La Caixa, was indebted to this entity. Thus, it was La Caixa that asked for the woman to be evicted. Egaña committed suicide on 9 November 2012, and recently it has been 12 years since.
Several groups have concentrated on Barakaldo on the anniversary of his death: In particular, in the light of the day, Berri-Otxoa and several trade unions have joined the call. They have recalled that, since Egaña's suicide, only in Barakaldo, at least 2,404 other families have been evicted. In the last year there have been 179 evictions, almost all of them related to rental: 88%. In addition, they have warned that over 100 homeless people live on the streets of Barakaldo, who have been evicted.
"After twelve years, evictions are still in place and Barakaldo's families have no choice of accommodation," the protesters denounced last weekend.
Following Egaña’s suicide in 2013, the Basque Government, the Eudel Association and the General Council of the Judiciary agreed on a protocol for action against evictions. But it is a burned paper: among other things, this protocol states that social services must ensure "an immediate response and urgent processing" to "ensure a housing alternative to all people and families affected by eviction".
A eviction yesterday in Astrabudua
A family was evicted yesterday in Astrabudua (Erandio, Bizkaia) a few kilometers from the Vizcaina town of Baraldo, in the state of Barakaldo. A 70-year-old woman has lost her home by being scammed by a loan company. The Ertzaintza organized a huge police device to carry out the eviction, and it threw itself on the concentrates, which were evicted.
Two months ago, the Barakaldo Municipal Police shot three young people who slept in a tunnel. Time has confirmed our suspicions: the official version has quickly placed the victim at fault.
