Urruña protest at the police operation against twelve migrant people
- On 27 August, some 300 people concentrated in front of the Church of San Bixintxo, convened by the Diakite and Bidasoa Etorkin associations, and denounced the police detention of 12 refugees on Friday.
At noon on 26 August, the French Police entered the church of San Bixintxo in Urruña, where it arrested 12 of the protected migrants, as the newspaper Berria specified. Diakite and Bidasoa Etorkin associations have on Saturday called for a concentration on the church portico to denounce police action and “impunity”.
Some 300 people have gathered in the protest, stressing that churches are “places of peace and protection” and that the legality of the operation is doubtful. In the Urruña neighborhood, Felipe Aramendi has conveyed the same opinion, noting that the church is a public space and that “ethically and humanely” it is reprehensible that the police should detain the migrants who were in it. The priest Mikel Epaltza has joined the concentration “to support immigrants” and has recalled that the church has for years been a refuge to which migrants know they are going and that they will receive support to go to Bayona. Prefet Eric Spitz of the Atlantic Pyrenees informed the members of the association that he had not issued an arrest warrant.
In the protest on Saturday, the Diakite and Bidasoa Etorkinen associations recall that around the border between Lapurdi and Gipuzkoa, migrants are increasingly being subjected to police persecution, and Friday is another example. They have sent a message of solidarity to immigrants.
