Zadorra Bizirik pointed out that the current situation of many rivers in Álava makes it "necessary" to declare new natural reserves in the territory "so that they can be effectively protected". At present there are only two natural reservoirs of rivers in the territory: The river Santa Engracia from its source to the tail of the Urrunaga reservoir; and the head of the river Altube. This type of protection is used to protect river sections that have not had human intervention or are very deficient.
Therefore, the ecologist group has requested the inclusion of several sections of rivers in the new River Plan of the Ebro Basin (2021-2027), pending approval: the river Purón from its sources to its mouth in the river Ebro, the river Omecilllo from its sources to the river Tumecillo, including the river Nozzaro, the river Arrida
Zadorra has worked with the collective Ekologistak Martxan and the Basque Water Agency (URA) to take account of the new designations, but so far they have not succeeded. Since the participatory process for the revision of the Hydrological Plan is open, Zadorra Bizirik has once again proposed the declaration of these sections located in Álava to "preserve or, at least, not deteriorate its natural state".
