A number of prisons re-implement containment measures, increasingly isolating prisoners
- The families of Basque prisoners imprisoned in the prisons of Jaén, Curtis (A Coruña), A Lama (Pontevedra) and Brieva (Ávila) in the Spanish state have denounced that they have reduced their face-to-face visits, according to ETXERAT.
ETXERAT has denounced that, as in the general lockdown, the measures taken in the prisons of the Spanish State are being implemented with a restrictive approach. ETXERAT has stated that the prohibition of previous visits or subsequent forced quarantine makes it difficult or impossible to contact the relatives of the deceased. "Lockdown decreed in prison exponentially multiplies damage," says ETXERAT. The association of family members of prisoners and exiles ensures that "the prohibition of any communication, the suspension of visits or calls, increases the isolation and exclusion of prisoners".
With the restrictive prescriptions in place, the channels of communication of family members of prisoners prior to the pandemic have not been regulated. In particular, the prisons of Jaén, Curtis (A Coruña), A Lama (Pontevedra) and Brieva (Ávila) have suffered a setback in the period of their relations with the Spanish State. In view of this background, ETXERAT says fear is spreading among relatives of Basque prisoners, especially with the widespread closure of prisons in the autumn. "Misinformation, insecurity and uncertainty, limited communications, fear of lack of visits for many months, anguish of distance and distancing... make their added burden of punishment greater."
At a time when society is being asked to act responsibly in the face of the pandemic, ETXERAT has denounced that the prison authorities "have discharged their responsibility and acted against the rights of prisoners and their families". "With respect to rights, health and life, it is time for the penitentiary administrations to assume their responsibility and not delay doing so".
As in recent times, ETXERAT has requested the transfer of prisoners to prisons close to their place of origin and the immediate release of severely ill prisoners and those over 65. On the other hand, ETXERAT recalled that, according to Spanish law, 80 Basque prisoners should be released on parole and that the freedom of prisoners in this situation should be taken as soon as possible.
