Libya disaster causes at least 6,200 deaths and more than 10,000 missing

Cyclone Daniel causes at least 6,200 deaths and more than 10,000 missing. The affected territory has been declared a catastrophic zone by the Government of the GNU National Union. The Libyan authorities have established three days of national mourning throughout the territory.
The cyclone has destroyed north-west Libya, especially the city of Derna. With a population of about 120,000, it is the fourth largest city in Libya. Its inhabitants are the majority of the dead and missing victims. In fact, the force of the storm broke two dams in Derna and 33 million uncontrolled cubic meters were poured into the city.
Rescues have difficulty reaching Derna because it is surrounded by mountains and cannot be reached by land. According to the Derna Zoom media, at least until Tuesday afternoon no rescue equipment has arrived, only two helicopters collecting the floating bodies.
The World Health Organization notes that it has sent aid but that it has difficulty in reaching the scene of the disaster. Martin Griffiths, UN Humanitarian Affairs Officer, announces that he will allocate EUR 9.3 million to Libya.
