At least 1,717 people died last year as a result of the migration policy of Spain and Europe
- Last year 1,717 people died, the highest number recorded so far, for attempting to enter the territory of the Spanish State. The Andalusian Human Rights Association holds those responsible for the "criminal migration policies" of the Spanish Government and the European Union responsible for these deaths. The association has denounced that, although the government coalition agreement showed willingness to change the situation, they have done nothing.
The Human Rights Defense Association criticizes the usual dynamic: many migrants are now arriving in the Canary Islands “and the government’s response is being repression: thousands of people locked in deplorable conditions, without guarantees of respect for human rights; thousands of people sleeping on the streets, without legal support, parents separated from their children…”. A 2-year-old girl has recently died, who has travelled from Mali to the Canary Islands in the skating house, according to police reports.
The new Government, since its inception
The members of the association have criticised the fact that the same repression is being repeated as the People’s Party under the PSOE-Podemos coalition government. “They seemed more sensitive to this issue, but they have rejected projects to ensure legal and safe pathways to migrants, even though they appeared in the initial government agreement. With the current legislation, the only thing they manage is to increase the mafias that traffic with people,” El Salton said.
Resources for outsourcing
Instead of allocating resources for the reception of migrants or for the safe conduct of travel, the association recalls that all resources for migration policy are intended to limit the entry of persons or to expel them. Among these resources are the Integrated External Surveillance System, the ICN converted into prisons for migrants, the walls of the Andalusian coast, or the agency Frontex, dedicated to monitoring borders and controlling boats and boats.
