At least 10,500 immigrants have died in the attempt to reach the Spanish coasts in 2024
In 2024, more than 30 migrants a day have died on average while trying to reach the shores of the Spanish State. Walking Borders has recorded 10,457 deaths and counted 131 boats that have disappeared "without trace". This figure is 58% higher than the previous year, the highest figure the entity has received so far. In 2024, most of the deaths lost their lives on the route to the Canary Islands.

Since last year, the number of people who have lost their lives in trying to reach the Spanish coasts has almost doubled. Most of the deaths occurred on its route to the Canary Islands, with 9,757 deaths recorded, accounting for 93% of the total. Walking Borders has emphasized that this trajectory is "the most lethal worldwide", as Fernández Díaz recalled. On the Algerian route, 517 people have died, in the Strait of Gibraltar 110 and in the Alboran Sea 72.
Among the migrants who have lost their lives in 2024, 1,538 have been children and 421 women. In addition, the organization has reported that 131 vessels, loaded with people, disappeared without any trace.
According to the information gathered by Walking Borders, a total of 26 countries have died in the attempt to reach the Spanish state, most of them in north-west Africa. The organization has reported an increase in Mauritania's departures to the Canary Islands, which took place this Wednesday. As for deaths per month, the month of April was the most serious (1,284 victims), followed by May (1,103) and February (1,093).
