In September 1993, the civil guard began a major operation in the vicinity of Mount Adarra, on the grounds that it was the businessman kidnapped by ETA Julio Iglesias. After several days of intense occupations and raids, more than twenty people were arrested, including Herri Batasuna's councillor at Gurutze Iantzi and her husband, Julen Irastorza.
On 24 September they received a telegram from the civil guard at the Urnieta City Hall, claiming that Iantzi had died at the Tres Cantos Police Station. Most of the detainees reported having been subjected to savage torture by their relatives and relatives. First in the Old San Sebastian headquarters and then in Madrid. "Bag", "bathtub", constant blows, threats, sexual humiliations... Irastorza was also tortured and after being released on 24 September, she learned that her wife had died.
According to the official version and the main Spanish media, Iantzi died of a heart attack due to an epileptic crisis, but at the autopsy conducted the following day the coroners verified that he suffered thrombosis in one of the arteries due to the physical violence of another. Irastorza herself observed in her cell how they took Iantzi from here to there and heard her cries.
The proceedings on this death were immediately agreed and the case has never been investigated judicially.
On Friday, September 24, friends and family will pay tribute to Gurutze Iantzi Igerategi in Plaza San Juan de Urnieta, beginning at 19:30 in the afternoon.
