On 19 October, thousands of people demonstrated in the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve in rejecting the Guggenheim project that the Basque Government wants to carry out there. The Guggenheim Urbaibai Stop platform, read at the end of the demonstration, has called on public administrations and authorities to halt the administrative and economic steps being taken to make the project viable.
The organizers have pointed out that the forecasts for the appointment have been exceeded. In the demonstration last year 4,000 people gathered and in the demonstration on Saturday "a lot more people", they explained.
Tailored to a private foundation
The platform has denounced that the museum has been presented as a single solution for the Busturialdea region. It is a “macro-project that promotes mass tourism” to address the economic decline of the region and that aims to “place it at the center” of a biosphere reserve. They say that the project is “tailor-made” by the Guggenheim Foundation, which aims to “satisfy your desires”. They criticize political leaders for using public money “for the benefit of a few”, as well as for “the destruction of the environment”. They have denounced that no environmental study has been carried out and stressed that they are the ones who want to decide their future.
What was said by PNV and PSE
The platform has stated in a statement that they are "surprised" by the statements of the leaders of some administrations. The platform states that the Provincial Council of Bizkaia has declared that the project “is not defined”, but that it has qualified it as “inescapable” and has qualified it as “national project”. He has also criticised the Socialist Party of the Basque Country: “He is not aware of the project and yet has signed a government agreement with the PNV.” The platform has also gathered the words of the Minister of Culture, María Dolores de Cospedal, that the project connects nature and art, but considers that the Guggenheim is "a cultural project without culture". Finally, they have pointed out that the new Basque Government has described it as a priority project. "In the midst of this chaos of confusion," the platform has stated that it has not yet decided whether the Guggenheim Foundation will proceed, although it has called the project "strategic".
