The Civil Guard says it chases "rumors and fake news" about COVID-19
- The Civil Guard investigates the "fake rumours and news" spread on social networks in relation to COVID-19, with the aim of reducing "the government's lack of institutional adherence and social stress". The professor of Constitutional Law, Mercé Barceló, has denounced that the work of the Civil Guard is to prosecute crimes, not "social stress". He recalled that giving false news "is not a crime" and that this persecution of civil guards is a restriction of freedom of expression.

General de la Guardia Civil, José Manuel Santiago, sent an email to the Spanish State Commanders on April 15 requesting information on the actions of the Civil Guard in the world of cyber, to prepare a report with all of them. This is one of the information you requested in that email: "Identification, investigation and follow-up of misinformation campaigns, rumours and fake news related to the situation generated by COVID-19." He says that these campaigns, rumours and false news "can lead to a lack of adherence to government institutions and cause social stress."
Santiago on the eve of the publication of these emails: "That the Civil Guard is working to reduce the climate of fighting the government's management of the crisis." Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska attributed this phrase to a "lapsus" attributed to him.
