The environmental organization Greenpeace has taken advantage of International Wetlands Day to denounce the Urdaibai project. The perfomance of animal and plant species that would be vulnerable as a result of the project has been carried out in the Bilbao museum, where each entrepreneur wore a t-shirt with the image of one of these species. In addition, a banner reading Stop Guggenheim Urdaibai has been displayed.

Greenpeace says the new building would have a direct impact on the ecosystem. In fact, it would be attracted by the Murueta shipyards, and the passage that would connect it to the current Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, would completely cross the Urdaibai wetland.

The wetland is classified as a wetland of international importance and "the project contradicts the criteria that this particular nature guarantees", in the words of the ecological organization "that guarantee the survival of the ecosystem and the well-being of the species that depend on it". On the other hand, it is recalled that wetlands not only guarantee the survival of ecosystems, but also play a role in addressing the climate emergency.

However, it is reported that the action is not against the museum, but against the damage caused by the works and sub-calendar of the project. Thus, Greeanpeace advocates a combination of culture and the environment.
