The temperature is increasing considerably in Mercedes following the negotiation of the working agreement at the Vitoria plant. Eighteen months ago, talks began between employers and unions, which have held 34 meetings, but there is no consensus. In this context, the management of the company announced last week its readiness to make an investment of EUR 1.2 billion in the plant, provided that workers accept greater “flexibility” in working conditions. The Council of Álava and the Government support Mercedes’ investment and leadership towards the workers. On Tuesday, the president of the Alavesa Provincial Council, Ramiro González, lehendakari, Iñigo Urkullu, and the director of the Mercedes plant, Emilio Tito, signed the “collaboration protocol”. She also attended the Councillor for Economic Development, Sustainability and the Environment, Arantxa Tapia. The unions denounced the “blackmail” of the company and the “pressure” of the organizations. Although there is no general union, the unions announce strikes.
Strikes
An open meeting was held on Wednesday between the Romanian trade unions ELA, LAB and ESK, who wanted to convene the general assembly of workers, but the other trade unions (UGT, CCOO, Ekintza, PIM) have not accepted it. The workers present supported the trade union proposal and therefore announced a one-week strike. It shall begin on 27 June and end on 1 July. CCOO and UGT held a two-hour strike on Wednesday at the company's entrance and announced two days of strike: 22 and 29 June. A new meeting will be held on Friday between the trade unions and the management of the company.
Working conditions and wages
Discrepancies between workers and employers relate to working conditions and wages. It corresponds to the sixth shift of the main sources of tension. The Company wants night workers to be able to extend their shift for another day when necessary – five consecutive nights of work to six. The ELA, LAB and ESK unions have also set as “red stripe” the maintenance of wages or the regulation of weekend and public holidays conditions. Berria has noted that UGT is willing to accept greater “flexibility”, but says that it would have to “regulate” and “limit”, and that wages should be updated according to the CPI.
