On 26 January a popular consultation was held in Gorliz to decide on the maintenance of the traditional cowboy festival at the Santiago festivities. Do you want jeans at Gorliz parties? In response to the question, a total of 902 people gave their opinion, about 18% of the census. Of them, 689 voted no, while 211 did (there was also one white and one null). However, the result was not binding in itself, so it was the plenary of the City Hall of Gorliz that had to decide whether or not to approve it. To this end, the debate was postponed last Friday until the extraordinary plenary session held on 6 February. Regarding the proposal of the PNV, this group and EH Bildu approved the result, while the Independents abstained because they considered that it did not conform to the characteristics of the popular consultation.
A total of 5,032 people, over 16 years old, registered in Gorliz, could vote in the popular consultation, of which 902 people have participated. "The participation was 18% and the minimum expected to be binding was not reached, although the City Council announced that the result would be taken into account to motivate its acceptance or not. All the citizens have had the opportunity to express their opinion freely and the difference between the two results has been greater than expected, that is, more than 10 points. Thus, the PNV considers that the plenary has to accept the opinion of the citizens," explained Gorliz Mayor Nagore Utxupi at the plenary session. Faced with this, EH Bildu also raised the need to support the outcome. "We are clear that participation has been high, although some believe it has been low. The question is: Where are all those in favor of jeans? The difference has been very large, and that must be acknowledged," said the councillor of the Abertzale coalition, Gabi de la Maza.
For its part, the Independent Group regretted the format of the popular consultation, "we have reiterated time and again that we are in favour of holding consultations, provided that they are clearly defined. In this case, we consider that the process has not been clear and that until we did what we proposed, the consultation had to be delayed," said Councilor Iban Pérez. He also pointed out that there is a party commission and that "they are in charge of removing or maintaining the activities of the parties".
