The Government of Navarra has submitted a study on the use and knowledge of the Basque language. The Councillor for Citizen Relations of the Basque Government, Ana OLLO, has highlighted the fact of the general competence of the Basque Country. The Basque population of Navarre is increasing by 6,800 people between 2016 and 2018, reaching 75,810 (14.1%). In addition to this number there are almost 43,000 more Navarros, confirming that they understand the Basque Country. These are the main conclusions of the Report of Sociolinguistic Data of Navarra published by Euskarabidea.
According to the data obtained, the majority of the Basque population of Navarre live outside the Basque Country. In particular, of the 75,800 vasco-speakers, 29,459 live in the vascophony zone, 42,551 in the mixed zone and 3,800 in the non-vascophony zone.
Regarding the knowledge of the Basque Country, by age, the evolution from 1991 to 2018 shows a notable increase in the knowledge of the Basque Country in the younger age groups. According to the latest data, 24.5% of the Navarra population between 16 and 24 years old is vasco-speaking. The percentage drops to 21.8% between 25 and 34 years of age, and to 14.1% between 35 and 49 years of age. On the other hand, 10.9% of people between the ages of 50 and 64 believe that they are Euskaldun and 8.4% believe that they are Basque among the population over 65 years of age.
Regarding the use of Euskera, 11.8% of the population of Navarre use it intensively or daily. This percentage rises to 13.9 per cent between the ages of 16 and 24. Unlike other indicators, the percentage of people using Basque in Navarre has not increased between 2016 and 2018.
According to data from 2018, with regard to the accreditation of the knowledge of almost 120,000 Navarros, 35.3% of the Navarros and Navarre, certifies that at some level Euskera is known, a percentage that in the case of young people rises to more than 50%. In addition, knowledge of English and French is higher among Euskaldunes (35.9%) than among non-Basque speakers (22.8%).
Finally, regarding media consumption in Euskera, 43.1% of Navarros and Navarre aged 16 and over reported reading the print media on paper in the week prior to the survey, compared to 39.3% who read it on digital media. 74.3% have listened to radio or podcasts or watched television in Basque in the same period of time.
The Navarra Federation of Municipalities and Councils was born with the objective of "protecting and promoting their shared interests and local autonomy". A Communication Officer will soon be selected who will have to master Spanish and Basque.
