Google falls down and you run out of the internet
It would not have happened, but it has happened.
It's not the first time it's happening, but it's about the biggest drop Google servers have ever suffered in the company's history. On December 14, 2020, as could not be otherwise, many of Google's services fell globally, so we couldn't use them. The search engine google.com continued to work, but Gmail, Drive, Calendar, Youtube... were cancelled.
The moment I'm writing this news, Google hasn't disseminated any information, but apparently there was an authentication problem. The services demanded by the user and the password were canceled, so it seems enough to open a new private window to access Youtube. At least, that is what some of the users of the website have disseminated.
All going on in an hour
In sixty minutes everything went back to normal and all the services offered by Google were already available. So we can say that giant G's response was correct and fast, but -- if next time you're not able to give such a response? What if on another occasion, along with Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Apple and Facebook apps fall?

You've been without the Internet
We have millions and millions of websites. Thousands of services, but you and I use a few each day. Gmail, Calendar, Amazon, Apple Cloud, Facebook, Whatsapp, Twitter, Instagram and... It's gone! It just comes out of this ecosystem. That's why Google fell yesterday and you ran out of the Internet. Not knowing what to do. You couldn't send emails (Gmail), you couldn't access your files (Google Drive), you couldn't check your agenda (Calendar) and you couldn't watch your favorite videos (Youtube), among others.
The dependence we have on these large companies is excessive. It's not healthy. In addition, not only you and I, but also the large and small businesses around us, have the same need. And so are many governmental and non-governmental organizations. If the Basque Country, and the rest of the states of the world, do not develop and implement its technological solutions, it is over.
At this point, free software has a lot to say. We knew we were at the mercy of others. As Iametza said in his Podcast, the cloud does not exist, it is another’s computer: we were warned, but this time we have felt it in our skin. Google computers were shut down. It was a few minutes, but in the future it can become a definitive situation. We're prisoners of these giants, and we have to start to wake up.
