More than 3,100 workers signed a letter last month condemning Google’s collaboration with the U.S. government and the Pentagon. The company’s director, Sundar Pichai, ignored the letter and now some employees have taken another step and decided to leave the company.
In the reasons given in the letter, the workers explained their responsibility for the fact that Google’s knowledge would be directed towards projects with war objectives. The application of artificial intelligence called "Project Maven" is responsible for the employees. This would classify and identify the millions of videos and images that the Pentagon receives through espionage.
Google is collaborating on this project, developing an automatic system that detects issues of interest in images and videos.
The employees now had three months of knowledge of the relationship between Google and the Pentagon. Google explained that its technology is not being used by the U.S. government to “identify targets,” but The New York Times reported that the company has failed to prove this by refusing to make its contract with the Pentagon public. So far, neither Google nor the Pentagon has provided any information to refute the fact that the system they are jointly developing will be geared towards military prosecutions, detection of air strikes and targeted assassinations.
