The Güeñes Bizia platform is dedicated to the damage that the toxic emissions of the Glefaran biomass plant can cause to the population of Zalla and Güeñes. In the face of air pollution, the City Hall wishes to hold a public debate with the representatives of both municipalities. To this end, on 10 February, Gorka Llantada, a member of the Gueñes Bizia platform, began a hunger strike.
The engineer Fernando Palacios, who worked at CSIC Spain, has produced a report on Glefaran’s activity at the request of the platform. The one presented by Palacios has the support of two other researchers. Emissions of toxic substances during biomass burning have been analysed, as well as the damage they cause to the environment and to people. The report notes that Güeñes and Zalla are in the largest emission zone and advises "to suspend immediately" the company's activity. The report supports this recommendation because it considers it to be the best option for the defence of health and the fight against the climate emergency. As he pointed out, “the plant’s activity does not correspond to the reduction of greenhouse gases. The burning of wood emits more carbon into the atmosphere than other fuels.”
Furthermore, the report has criticised both Glefaran and the Basque Government, which have denied any pronouncements. According to the report, the dumping of dangerous emissions has taken place in an uncontrolled manner. The Glefaran Integrated Environmental Authorisation (AAI) has highlighted the shortcomings and irregularities it is suffering and has accused the company and the Basque Government of having infringed the regulations on pollution control and prevention: “The emissions of dangerous substances have to be incorporated, but the IBB does not collect the harmful substances that are produced when burning wood.” The report also accuses the Department of the Environment of "non-compliance" with its duties for, among other reasons, the issuance of the AAI under these conditions.
