It is becoming increasingly clear that Italy is moving away from the European Union because of its lukewarm response to the coronavirus issue. Several EU countries are not prepared to pay the bill for the crisis jointly through Eurobonds and mutualisation, although they recognise that the spread of the disease has had nothing to do with the economic policies of one country or another. The Dutch Government has shown itself in this tense place.
All the leaders will meet on Thursday in front of the screen to give an opportunity to a fund of EUR 54bn, but it is still to decide what the distribution mechanism will be. In this context, the Italian Prime Minister, Giuseppe Conte, made harsh statements against the Netherlands, in an interview in the German press, which showed the extent of the tax leakage between European companies.
"Look at the example of the Netherlands," the Italian Prime Minister said, "because its tax dumping attracts thousands of multinationals, move their headquarters and get the flow of stolen tax revenue to other members of the European Union: EUR 9 billion per year, according to a study by the Tax Justice Network."
