Beach lifeguards in Gipuzkoa denounce precarious working conditions
- ELA reports on the precarious work of the first responders in Gipuzkoa and asks the Red Cross and the municipalities to “get wet” in this situation. On Friday, a press conference was held in San Sebastián.
In Gipuzkoa there are eight municipalities that own the beaches: Hondarribia, Donostia, Orio, Zarautz, Getaria, Zumaia, Deba and Mutriku. About 100 first responders are providing services and they are all hired by the Red Cross, since the City Hall outsources the services.
The first responders are all temporary, although many have been carrying out this task for years. They charge less than 1,000 euros per month (11,412,80 per year) and the Red Cross agreement applies to them. The ELA denounces that “this situation does not correspond to the level of responsibility that these first responders assume in their labor practice.”
They “demand” the municipalities and the Red Cross to provide solutions to this situation because “we can’t have lifeguards working in these working conditions on our beaches, considered one of the best beaches in the world.”
“In order to dignify these working conditions,” ELA says it will continue to work with the first responders and will begin mobilizations in the coming weeks.
