The objective of the workers is to overcome the wage gap that has been applied to them in the Basque Country. The Courts and Commissioners of Gipuzkoa are in charge of cleaning and have compared their actions with street cleaners, almost all men. According to estimates by the trade unions, people working in police stations are 13% less and those in the courts 7% less.
They have denounced that the wage gap occurs both in the base salary and in the allowances, among other things. The Convention regulates the costs of toxicity and hardship, but it does not apply to them, arguing that they do not carry out risky work. The unions are prepared to bring the matter to court because they believe that workers are at risk and if they win the sentence, and they receive the allowances, the wages would rise from 20% to 30%.
On April 29, at the Kaxilda library in Donostia, ELA and ARGIA organized a round table in which Nekane Zabala, a cleaner from the Hernani police station, participated. Stitxu Eizagirre picked up on his blog what the striking worker told about his struggle: “We must equip barrels with the conditions of the cleaners within the courts and police stations to bridge the wage gap.”
