The Tax Disobedience Initiative to Refuse to Finance War Is Underway

By 2025, the Spanish State will allocate 36 billion euros to the Army; the amount, with hidden expenses, can reach 60 billion. This military budget exceeds the investment of the Minimum Living Income and has led to cuts in health, education and social services. The Fiscal Objection platform denounces that military spending fuels global violence and that governments prioritize the interests of the arms industry.
The Basque Government and the Government of Navarre are also involved in military spending, they say, promoting defence industries and contributing to state budgets. In this context, they consider the Fiscal Objection to be of particular importance in combating the financing of war. In the face of the militarization intensified by the war in Ukraine, it is said that this initiative becomes an effective resource for building an alternative future.
How to participate?
The initiative requires that part of the taxes be allocated to social and solidarity projects such as feminism, housing rights, ecology and international cooperation. The process is simple: it is necessary to specify in the income statement that an amount is to be granted to these entities by diverting the corresponding part of the military expenses.
The initiative states that the Fiscal Objection is not a solitary struggle, but a collective action carried out in solidarity. It sends a clear message to governments and the arms industry: "We don't want to be complicit in the war." The promoters have said that there is an opportunity to build a more just and peaceful world in the Basque Country and that it is time to take steps.
