The survey was conducted on 800 people living in the UAE who are between 18 and 35 years old. Research has shown that young people feel "voiceless" about mental health issues, with 64.5% of respondents feeling that their opinion about mental health is not heard. In addition, almost all of the respondents expressed their support for public health: 87.7% believe that mental health treatments should be in charge of public health.
While 53% of young people say their mental health is good, one in three young people in the last year has asked for help in addressing mental health issues. However, the survey indicates that many young people do not have anyone they trust to talk about their problems and concerns: only one in four and 15% feel abandoned. On the other side of the coin we find those who have turned to the psychologist, who represent 21.8% and 15%, who have taken medication. In the latter data, the largest gender gap is observed, with women making a difference of ten percentage points for men, with values of 19.6% and 10.5%, respectively.
In conclusion, the hardest data are collected in relation to suicide. Since the age of 15, 24.5% of people between the ages of 18 and 35 in the Basque Country have considered suicide at some point. The percentages are even higher for those between 18 and 24 years of age, with almost one in three (30%) considering suicide.
