A study published in the journal The Lancet notes that between October 2023 and June 2024 in Gaza there have been 40% more deaths than those confirmed by the Palestinian Ministry of Health. Only live deaths, i.e. deaths by bomb or by artifact shot, have been recorded in the study. This magazine last summer estimated that the number of indirect deaths from illness or hunger that remained under destroyed buildings could exceed 185,000.
The Ministry of Health, which reported a total of 37,877 deaths since the beginning of the war on 7 October 2023 until June 2024, has noted that the figure is higher in the Lancet study. The study estimates that the number of deaths may be between 55,298 and 78,525, although the official death toll is estimated at 64,260 people.
The research focuses only on direct deaths, i.e. those directly resulting from violence (bombs, shots, etc.). ). It does not take into account deaths indirectly, i.e. those who have died from illness or other causes.
The Lancet's research has been carried out by researchers from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. For this purpose, the statistical method known as Sonic-Recapture, used by the environmental organization, has been used. This method allows the calculation of death figures. This method has taken into account the list of bodies identified in hospitals or tanatories by the Ministry of Health, the list of murders of relatives sent by Palestinians over the Internet and the death notices published on social networks.
In another study published in The Lancet last summer, they explained that, if indirect ones are taken into account, the figure would exceed EUR 185,000. For direct and indirect causes, it is estimated that the number of deaths could increase by 70 per cent, representing 8 per cent of the total population.
One of the researchers, Que Jamaluddin, however, has stated that it is not enough to have a record of what happened, but that concrete actions are needed to save lives and stop human suffering.
The world has also done so, because it is a symbol, because in history more genocides have already been done and will be done (bad luck, hear, it has touched you to be born there), but Palestine has special characteristics:
