The appearance was made by the resident association Gasteiz Txiki of the Casco Viejo and Auzo Bizi, with the support of CEAR, the Social Rights Platform, Talka and Kale Gorrian Inor Ez. The agents have denounced the case of the family that ARGIA announced on 10 May in Bilbao. They have recalled that the couple and the three minors spent the confinement in a single room and that when they were expelled from the room the only thing the social services offered them was to pay the bus ticket to a city in the state. The family had occupied a house without electricity and water in the houses of Olarizu, and has since suffered the "continuous pressure" of the police.
Amelia Barquín and Manu Arakama from Gasteiz Txikia have asked several questions in the Neighborhood: “How is it that neither the City Hall nor the other public administrations are able to give an immediate response? How is it possible that the hundreds of empty dwellings held by the City Council and the Basque Government are not immediately offered to the people and families who need them?” They have also denounced those who have collaborated “from solidarity and mutual protection of neighbours and neighbours”, “instead of recognition”, have received police fines.
New call from social services
The situation of the family could improve in the coming days. As explained in a press conference, on Friday, “when the call for this press conference was made public”, they received the call from the social services, which have found “a temporary residential solution for the family”. Barquín and Arakama have underlined the “forcefulness and determination that the family has had to assert its rights and denounce the situation. But they also wanted to focus on other families who are “locked” or “in a situation of disability.”
Concrete reflection of a more global situation
Agents say that what the family is experiencing is an “example” of a more global reality: “We want to denounce the actions of the city’s political leaders, revealing a concrete and very significant situation of what is happening. Indeed, in Vitoria-Gasteiz there are serious cases of violations of basic social rights.” They recalled the statements of the head of the Social Policy area on 20 April: “We must prevent any citizen from being abandoned or neglected on social issues, access to housing or protection of rights. We will not leave anyone behind.”
Barquín and Arakama have denounced that the reality is the opposite: “It’s clear that they’re leaving out a lot of people. The situation of many families in this pandemic and emergency situation is worsening. The institutional response, rather than alleviating, has contributed to worsening some situations.”
Need for complaint and community
Barquín and Arakama have appealed to people in situations of exclusion or who know similar cases, both to denounce situations and to contact social agents and neighborhood networks: "These complaints must be made public so that the authorities and those responsible can once and for all comply with their social and ethical obligations." Faced with the worsening socio-economic situation in the coming years, the press conference ended stressing the importance of creating "Community networks of mutual assistance" and strengthening existing ones.
