ELA and LAB trade unions call for the closure of Michelín de Vitoria-Gasteiz after the entry of a coronavirus worker
- The worker who was admitted was dedicated to the distribution of personal protective equipment among the rest of the staff. LAB has denounced that safety is impossible and that the company has put its economic benefit above health. ELA asks to disinfect the entire plant.
Michelín de Vitoria-Gasteiz reopened its doors last Tuesday with the aim of giving continuity to the race. Since then, at least one worker has been sick with COVID-19 – LAB has reported that the company does not provide information on contaminated workers. The worker who has been transferred to the hospital is a subcontractor of the company Ferrovial, Vitoria-Gasteiz. Last week, according to the unions, he worked in the distribution of personal protective equipment among the workers of the company.
One of the largest Alavesas companies resumed production early Tuesday. To comply with the security measures, only a quarter of the workers then started working, some 800.ARGIA were present at the event, where there were several violations and difficulties in complying with the relevant security measures. Over the next few days, the number of workers increased progressively and on Friday virtually all of the workforce was occupied – over 3,000 –.

LAB has denounced that Michelín’s management has imposed the economic benefit on health as a whole. He has admitted that "drastic" security measures have been imposed, but has warned that they are "not enough either". Calls for the closure of Michelin and the suspension of other activities that are not essential: "In a company like Michelin, exemplary preventive measures are being put in place, but production is not needed, as they already have enough stock. But the employers and the Basque Government will set an example to the decisions made in this large company when there is no need for production and thousands of masks and gloves are wasted that are not used in basic services".
With the cessation of activity, the ELA syndicate has called for plant disinfection: "We must stop using the facilities, disinfect them and return to the activity." In addition, it has called for the identification of other workers who have had contact with the infected worker and for all to be quarantined.
