40% of Vitoria-Gasteiz household employees are migrants
- The Rational Consumption Consortium has carried out a study to analyze the reality of care and home workers in Vitoria-Gasteiz.
On Monday morning, the consortium presented a diagnosis of the situation of domestic workers and the need to take care of them. Among the data offered, they have emphasized that although 90% of the staff employed in the care sector are women, the majority of residences, cleaning companies and home service managers are "white men", it is precisely men who accumulate benefits.
The social educator, Estibaliz Gómez de Segura, explained that 37,243 household employees are registered in the Social Security system, and that 37.79% are migrants. He also pointed out that in 2017, 16% of workers who slept at employers' homes were people without papers. He also recalled that most of them came from countries such as Venezuela, Nicaragua or Honduras, among others.
The delegate without Borders has denounced that violations of rights of all kinds are "frequent" in this sector. With regard to labour rights, he stressed that, among other things, they work without a contract, that the functions to be performed are not limited, that working hours are not respected and that they have a precarious wage. Moreover, they have rejected the practice of "discriminatory treatment" on many occasions, in addition to working without social security, and have pointed out that they suffer machic, racist, clasile and, on occasion, sexual assaults.
In the face of this situation, it has brought many demands to the labour inspectorate, to the trade unions, to feminist groups, to employers, to home workers and to society. As far as rights are concerned, in addition to demanding an end to existing discriminatory legislation, it has called on trade unions to encourage collective bargaining in the sector and to join the demands of carers. On the other hand, she has asked feminist groups to promote the association of these workers and to make visible the working conditions of the sector. Gómez de Segura has also stressed that "it is time to empower workers".

The Rational Consumption Consortium consists of the following associations: Setem Hego Haizea, Mugarik Gabe and Medicus Mundi Araba. This initiative has for years been committed to sustainable and transformative consumption, working three fundamental axes: responsible consumption, food sovereignty and care. The results of the study on this last topic will be presented at the civic center of El Campillo, at 19:00, on Wednesday, May 15.
Having made the results known, they have announced that they will continue to work, meeting with the different actors and sharing their proposals.
