Collection of signatures for the Plaza España of Vitoria-Gasteiz to become Plaza Nueva
- In order to put pressure on the people and transfer the issue to the City Hall, a collection of signatures on the internet has been launched so that the one called Plaza de España por la Guerra Civil Española de 1936 recovers its original name: Plaza Nueva.
As explained in the argumentative text of the request, the plaza has received different names. Built in 1791 by the architect Justo Antonio Olagibel, it was known as Plaza Nueva in the first two decades of the 19th century. Then he also received the names of Plaza de la Constitución, Plaza de Alfonso XIII and Plaza Central del Palacio. “When on August 26, 1936, the Francoists became superior in Vitoria-Gasteiz at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War, the plaza was first named a Spanish plaza. It’s time to officially reclaim the name of Plaza Nueva,” the initiative claims.
The proposal has already received over 500 signatures.
