At 02:30 in the morning and after twelve hours of meeting, the Spanish Government announced the measures agreed with the National Road Transport Committee. In total, EUR 1.050 million has been agreed on in support of housing construction. EUR 600 million will be used to reduce the price of gas oil. The government assumes the cost of a 15 cent reduction per litre and the oil industry of 5 cents per litre. The remaining EUR 450 million will be allocated as direct aid to both freight and passenger carriers: EUR 1,250 per truck, EUR 950 per bus, EUR 500 per van and EUR 300 per light vehicle. On Tuesday, the meeting of the Council of Ministers of the Government of Spain will be held, where the Decree of Law with these measures would be adopted, and would then enter into force.
The strike, for the time being, in force
“The government has done its job and the transport sector has to be responsible (...) There are no reasons or excuses for not returning to business,” said Spanish Minister of Transport Raquel Sánchez recently. The chairman of the National Road Transport Commission, Carmelo González, also pointed out that the agreement no longer provides grounds for a strike and stressed that the measures were adopted “unanimously”.
But the associations that have called for a strike have not been on the table. The Hiru trade union, which has had a large presence in the mobilizations of Hego Euskal Herria, announced on Thursday that this meeting would not take any decision on the strike. Their demands go beyond those measures. The main one is the automatic fee review. At the national level, the National Transport Defense Platform has ensured that, beyond the measures that could be taken, it "radically" rejected the strike if the government does not meet with it. It is precisely those who are on strike who will speak to the Ministry of Transport in Madrid.
