Garoña workers detect irregularities in the level of irradiation received at the last inspection
- The Nuclear Safety Council has pointed out that there are significant deficiencies in the planning of pre-demolition works. The inspection took place last March and the committee's report concludes that the lack of planning will affect the calculation of the degree of irradiation of workers.
The routine monitoring of radiation which was issued in March by the Bilbao Nuclear Safety Council produced results that were contrary to those of this body. In fact, both individually and as a group, workers at the Garoña nuclear power plant are receiving irregular irradiation, as long as this is the case, according to this inspection.
In the conclusions of the inspection, they stress that “the highest indicator of individual dose officer and the value of the dose at the administrative level are not consistent”. That is why the committee has called for further continuous estimates of radiation doses to workers.
Never-ending ending
Garoña stopped producing nuclear energy in December 2012 and the definitive closure of the plant took place on 1 August 2017. However, work is still underway at the plant in a pre-demolition phase and the demolition of the building will not arrive until 2021. Environmental groups in the Basque Country and the Spanish State have denounced in recent years that the final end of the nuclear power plant is late and call for the process to be speeded up.
