Galicia celebrates World Forest Day by eliminating eucalyptus
- On Saturday, 23 March, on the occasion of World Forest Day, a campaign has been organised in Galicia to remove eucalyptus that has become monocultures in the Galician mountains and valleys and which in recent times have caused extraordinary fires, claiming its replacement by sustainable forests.
The Cousa de Roots coalition, composed of about 60 associations, has called for the extraction of eucalyptus and other invasive plants from the Galician mountains, inviting all educational centers, associations, platforms and citizens to participate in the action.
The UN has set as its motto this year's edition of World Forest Day the motto "learn to love the forest", for which Cousa de Raices says that first we must "distinguish what is a forest and what is not. A forest is a complex ecosystem made up of trees and other plants in which animals, fungi and microorganisms live in permanent contact. On the contrary, a tree plantation consists of the same trees, brought from outside and which do not develop a lasting relationship with other indigenous species, transformed by a purely commercial interest. These plantations of external species cause serious damage to indigenous species, as well as to soil, streams and biodiversity, promoting the spread of fires. As for the genus Eucalyptus, in Galicia today they occupy more than 500,000 hectares, 17% of the total area of the country".
Following the call of Cousa de Raices, some eucalyptus removal actions have already been set for Thursday, at least in these places: Fraga (A Coruña), Rebordelo (Cerdive-Cotobade), Froxán (Lousame), Gradín (Ponte Caldelas), Riba, Cousa Vella (Agolada), Río Tea (Mondariz), Tourón (Melón)...
