“Gaindegia, due to its economic difficulties, has suspended the activities of the observatory on 30 June. Therefore, you have not created or disclosed any new content ever since.” With this Laconic message, Gaindegia, the socio-economic observatory of Euskal Herria, has suspended his work for 17 years. In addition, it has closed the work for economic reasons. In part, the organisations that supported the project, such as the Council of Gipuzkoa, the Basque Government and others, have been the victims of their lack of interest in an observatory that crossed the administrative borders of their territories.
Overabundance should never come to this situation. It emerged from the need for the X-ray of our people to be as complete and truthful as possible, since we had only partial and often mistaken visions of the reality of Euskal Herria. The best ally of this vague vision was the territorial administrative political division that has imposed on us. From the very beginning, Gaindegia tried to overcome this barrier, providing data and analysis that would help to have the picture of a more complete Basque Country, above the territorial fragmentation. This contribution was put at the service of social, political and media players so that everyone could use it for their strategy.
These objectives 17 years ago remain as valid as before. The Centre’s partners, social partners and administrations should consider making the future of Gaindegia viable again. It is a socio-economic observatory at the service of this people, at the service of the Basque Country, to which we in theory dream and continue to fight for it. Currently, Gaindegia remains a necessary and irreplaceable national institution.
