Next Saturday a "special" tournament will take place in Lezama at the sports facilities of Athletic Club. Friendly football matches will be conducted by Euskaldunes judges, and the prize will not only be for the team that usually includes more goals or that wins more games, but also for the one that most Euskera uses.
For the second consecutive year the Euskara football tournament, jalgi hadi plazara, organized by the Club de Fútbol Doce de Bilbao – and promoted by the Vice-Ministry of Linguistic Policy of the Basque Government (VPL) will be held. The latter has pointed out that "there are two or three years that we are promoting the use of Euskera in sport", so this type of initiative considers important.
The Twelve Football Club aims to "integrate people from different backgrounds through Euskera and sport" and "extend Euskera to the world and Euskera through football".
Four sports associations from all over Euskal Herria will participate in the tournament: Twelve football clubs (Bilbao, Bizkaia), Unión Tudela (Tudela, Navarra), Arranoak (Ortzaize, Baja Navarra) and Zestoa KB (Zestoa, Gipuzkoa).
In the joint note, the presidents of the four clubs state that, despite belonging to "different corners" of the Basque Country, they have the same objective: "That the young people of Euskal Herria have the possibility to practice sport in Basque in their daily lives, that they learn and enjoy this element that makes us Basques".
Awards will start at 11:00 and will take place at 14:00. Finally, the participants will have a lunch and will have the opportunity to chat with each other, of course in Basque.
